Chemicals used in fish farming

There are various chemicals used in fish farming .Some of them used for treatments, diseases control and some used in cleaning activities.

In fish farming (aquaculture in general), chemicals can be grouped into two groups which are:

Agriculture chemicals

These chemicals are normally used to control pests in crops and aquatic conditions, good examples includes; insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.

Veterinary chemicals

These chemicals are mainly used to treat animals, bees and fish or any chemical used to treat animals are generally to be veterinary chemical product.

Though there many chemicals produced in industries, but not all are qualifying to be applied in our fish farms .Fish farmers should put in mind that they are highly advised to use chemicals which are;

  • Authorized by a particular organization in power

  • Use chemicals in accordance with the instructions on the labels

  •  Based on their specific proposed use

  • Operative: Produce required effect based on the use

Environmental friendly: Chemicals should not threat the life of people, plants, animals and micro-organisms around the fish farms.

Favorable for aquaculture products: That not threaten the life of fish, quality fillets etc.
Immersed in water

Some chemicals which are qualifying to be used includes
  • Formalin
  • Chloramine T
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Oxytetracycline
  • Tricaine methane

For injection –Chorionic gonadotropin

In feeds-Oxytetracycline dehydrate and Ormetoprin

All in all, Fish farmers should always be close with their local, district or Municipal aquaculture officers not only in issue of use chemicals but also other issues concern fish farming. These chemicals tend to be very dangerous if are not used based on their instructions and targeted purposes which may results in massive death of fish and conflict with the authority and neighbors.
