Rearing of fish in Hapa

REARING OF FISH IN THE HAPA

Hapa is normally made by using nylon (polyethylene) net and rope which sewn together to a particular shape depend on the farmer preference like square .circular or rectangular e.t.c. In some countries like China and Thailand hapas are inserted with bamboo poles instead of sewn rope.

Hapas fitted directly into the concrete pond at Kunduchi-Dar es salaam

The size and thickness of the hapa affected mainly by;

Size of fish

Thinner mesh is used to hold fry and juvenile fish while broader mesh used to hold  Brooder

Predators

Normally in areas where there are many predators it’s highly advisable to use double walled nets in order to reduce effect.

*All in all ,the size of the hapas tend change but mostly 1m x 1m and 3 m x 3 m  and depth of 1.5 m used although some may use large haps depend on the target of fish farmer.

 Note

• Fish reared in the hapas should be fed daily

• Frequent brushing of the walls of hapas is necessary in order to prevent clogging due to silt deposition

Advantages of using Hapa

1. Easy collection of fry  due to fact that brood fish can be caught easily

 2. Hapa may be set up in many different areas

 3. Brood fish and fry can be  managed and separated without cause stress to the fish

4. Reduce drainage of ponds during fry or brood fish collection hence save water

Challenges of using hapa when rearing fish

• Fish farmer must fed his/her fish daily

• Poor water quality that is contributed by accumulation and decomposition of  waste at the bottom of hapas

• Frequent replacement of hapas due to wastes clogging and degradation of hapa materials by sunlight

• Tend to be affected by hash climatic condition like floods and heavy wind

• Management is highly required
