The truth behind of using tape water in fish culture

Tape water implies water supplied to the tap and normally known as Municipal water/city water / town water. Its uses includes drinking, cooking and washing.

According to the water quality standards tape water is normally treated in order to ensure that it’s safe for consumption. To achieve Chlorine is added in the water and water pH is controlled to meet standard that is required for its uses.

But for fish it’s a different issue due to the fact that Chlorine is harmful to the fish. Fish farmer should know that any direct use of tape water may bring problem to his or her fish and hence certain conditions must be fulfilled or followed before being used in a fish pond.

* Different fish species have a different specific water requirement  hence additional adjustments is necessary.

In this chapter we shall look of some of the rules or steps to consider when a fish farmer want to use a tap water in his or her fish ponds.

  1.   Fish farmer should has clear knowledge or experience on the type fish he or she want to culture. If not so farmer should has fish keeping book or get advice from expert to find out what specific requirements and facilities are needed for rearing that fish type .

2   Never use water  from hot tap or artificially softened water

Soft water is a water that contains low levels of dissolved              minerals. The big challenge of use soft water is that exhibits a    stronger tendency towards pH instability.

3   Fish farmer should use water from the main-fed cold tap and not      from tank supply

Note

Water from tank supply tend to get worse when

  • The water is heated by sunlight and become war
  •  Lined with inapt materials
