Fish hatchery bio-security plan





DAILY ROUTINE FOR HATCHERY TO ENSURE PREVENTION AND CONTROL SPREAD OF INFECTION/DISEASE

Clothes change and cleaning of hands with soap/ formalin

-A farmer is required to have special clothes for hatchery work in order to prevent infection of diseases from outside.

Check of fish condition and removal of wastes

-Fish condition include:
·        If there is dead brooder/fry/larvae
·        Egg trays if are well positioned and eggs alive
·        Disease signs

-Wastes includes :
·        Dead eggs (whitish in color)
·        Dead fish (larvae, fry and brooder)

Check water quality and supply system

-Water quality includes :
·        Smell of water supposed to be free from odor smell
·        Color should be slight green
·        pH,DO,Co2 and NH3

-Water supply system includes:
·        Water flow gravity
·        If there is leakage in pumps, tanks and ponds
·        Cease of water flow into incubators, larvae and fry rearing tanks

Water exchanges

-Water exchanges enable good oxygen circulation in the tanks and ponds
-Reduce Ammonium and Carbon dioxide  level    in the water

Read reports  and daily records

-A farmer should read  reports  and records of the previous day
This will enable farmer to know:
·        How he/she will start on the new day
·        Progress  of the fish and business as whole
·        Take appropriate action and measures based on the circumstances

Disinfection of fish handling and   feeds facilities

-Reduce introduction , spread and growth of disease/infection
·        Farmer is supposed  to clean facilities using soap/ formalin if it is available

Fish feeding

-A farmer should make sure that he/she is feed fish at proper time, amount and same place  every day
·        Brochures/ poster should available around the tanks/ponds/ walled  containing information about how to feed fish should be available
·        A farmer should has special worker who is well familiar about fish feeds and feeding

Cleaning  areas around  the hatchery (general cleaness)

-It is essential to maintain clean environment in and around hatchery area so as to prevent disease vectors, infection and condusive environment  for pathogen growth
*In case of Artificial
Propagation (Catfish, tilapia tuna etc.)

Disinfection of all breeder from other source

·        Breeder from other source like river, lake and other fish farmers
-Immerse breeder in 15 ml formalin containing water for 30 minutes

All facilities for artificial propagation should be disinfected

·        Includes
-egg trays, plastic buckets, mortar pestle,scissor,tongs,knives,tables incubators and towels

Disinfection of fish eggs

-Disinfection of fish eggs before set in incubator help in reducing bacterial and fungal infection to the eggs
-By immersing fish eggs into 1000ml formalin dissolved in 1l of water for 30 minutes

Cleaning of  all facilities before and after use

-By using soap/ any easy available detergent
5
Proper storage

-Fish feeds, feeding and handling facilities and cleaning equipment
