Ways to Control  fish predators to increase  fish production

Control of fish predator is key crucial role in management fish farm, it ensures high survival of fish and return.

In fish farming, there are various predators which tend to eat fish in a ponds. Some of these predators come from air, water and land.

The following are potential predators that are likely to attack fish:

Herons

Otter

human being

Frog
Squirrels
Monitor lizard
Opossum

Pelicans

Raccoon

The following are the ways used to control predators;

1. Identify local predators around the area

This process should be conducted at the early stage of surveying the land in which fish ponds will be constructed.

Information about local predators can be available from district animal control, fellow fish farmers and by ask indigenous people around the area.

2. Reduce the opportunity for plunder

The way we construct our fish ponds may provide a chance for predator to attack our fish hence care should be taken while planning and construct of fish ponds like

  • Construct large pond and deep as possible
  • Locate your ponds where you can observe them easily by window or dour
  • Have a light to illuminate fish ponds (some predators prefer dark condition)
  • Construct your pond in a way that it has a room fish to move

3. Prevent the predators that pose the greatest threat

  • Fertilizer the ponds

Fertilized pond

  • Netting: covering the ponds with netting especially at the night

Covered tank

  • Decoys

  • Repellents

Use smell and taste to ward off predators like squirrels and      raccoons

  • Hiding places

Provide a plenty of hiding materials like floating vegetation for fish to hide

  • Fill the pond with the maximum amount of water as possible

  • Garden hose

  • Use of alligator decoy in the pond (natural predators of herons)
